HMAS Tobruk dive site
News that the former naval vessel HMAS Tobruk will be sunk between Hervey Bay and Bundaberg was great news for the region Fraser Coast Mayor Chris Loft said.
“It will help attract more tourists to the region and boost the economy,” he said.
“We need more attractions to diversify our tourism product to attract people here and encourage them to stay longer.
“It fits well into Council’s plans to increase tourism numbers across the region.”
The project was a shining example of co-operation: across all levels of government as well as regionally, Cr Loft said.
“The Fraser Coast worked with the Bundaberg Regional Council, Regional Development Australia and a committee of volunteers headed up by Ed Gibson to pull this off,” he said.
“Everyone deserves a huge pat on the back for their untiring efforts to secure the former naval supply ship to be sunk as a military dive site between Hervey Bay and Bundaberg.
“I expect this will make a huge difference to Burrum Heads as the most likely departure point for divers to head out to the wreck from the Fraser Coast,” Cr Loft said.
